A Reflection...

May 21st marks the celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). More specifically, the day highlights the need for accessible digital tools for all people with impairments on the planet. This year is in some ways more unique; as we are all physically distanced from one another, digital communications are critical to staying socially connected.

In 2017, over 6.2 million Canadians had an impairment, according to Statistics Canada (that includes physical, intellectual, mental health, and learning disabilities). Microsoft estimates that only 1 in 10 Canadians living with an impairment have access to the technology that they need.

Right now, I am using a device to publish this post. Tomorrow, I will continue to use my devices to stay connected with friends and family. The journey towards giving more people access to the technology they need starts with awareness. What can we do to give another person the opportunity to be connected? To get their groceries, be aware of current events and start a new hobby—these are among so many other things that we can accomplish with access to technology. In a world that is flooded continuously with technology, it is easy to forget that not everyone has the same type of access. Everyone's specific needs are different, and we must continue to be adaptable so that everyone has an equal opportunity for success. Equal access is a big dream, but that is the world we need to strive to build.

This video is a perfect example of how technology adapted uniquely for Sady has allowed her to excel at something she loves.
